Florida Democrats Display Ignorance... Again

Goodbye Janet Reno. or hello new Democratic gubernatorial candidate? I guess we won't really know until Tuesday, when Reno's "searching for votes" in South Florida's heavily Democratic problem precincts must be concluded. De ja vu. We should be proud. We made the cover of The New York Times (Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002) with another election debacle.

Contributors to Orlando Sentinel's "Your Thoughts" on last Tuesday's primary election scream of "another attempt by Republicans to STEAL another election"- fingering Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris and "their cronies" in corrupt election practices.

As far as I can tell, the squabbling (and possible legal action) includes two Democrats- and a handful of heavily Democratic voting precincts. Have these voters again failed the challenge of the incredibly complex and confusing voting process? Perhaps we should implement construction paper, crayons, and check boxes to the general election to make it easier.

To settle the record, and because there seems to be some continued ignorance, I mean- "misunderstanding", to the facts, let's take a quick look at the realities of the last election that we "tried to steal" with, of course, the help of the U.S. Supreme Court:

1) The U.S. Supreme Court did NOT elect Bush in 2000. The court did NOT halt the ballot recount- or rule against Florida doing a recount.

2) The Supreme Court DID say that if Florida decided to recount, due-process and the equal protection clauses of the 10th and 14th Amendments required a statewide recount- not just the heavily Democratic counties that Gore was pressing to exclusively recount- from the very beginning.

3) The State of Florida, well within its legal and Constitutional rights, decided against a statewide recount, based on the time limit already established by law to complete recounting. Florida had absolutely no choice but to certify the election results as they stood.

4) Not once did Al Gore request a statewide recount. He consistently requested recounts only in heavily Democratic counties.

5) Independent organizations, along with several media organizations (including the Orlando Sentinel), took it upon themselves to conduct several full state-wide recounts and a complete analysis of the botched election. Not ONE SINGLE recount, using ANY standard, Republican or Democratic, would have resulted in Al Gore netting more legitimate votes than George W. Bush.

6) Can you imagine the front-page headlines if the findings had favored Gore? "Republicans Recoil From Proof That Election Was Stolen" or "Bush Administration Refuses to Accept Fact That It Is Illegitimate" . in reality, the very anticipated outcome of the largely liberal analysis of Election 2000 was buried deep in the papers. and not covered to any significant extent by the broadcast media.

Bob Poe and Florida's Democratic Party are no doubt burning up the phone lines with desperate pleas to Janet Reno- to bag it. Don't they understand that these Clinton throwbacks truly believe that public office is their birthright? Losing an election, therefore, becomes and unacceptable and impossible reality.

It'll be interesting to see what happens if Erskine Bowles loses against Elizabeth Dole in N.C. third time's a charm?
