Police and intelligence agents have arrested a man suspected of luring Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl to his death, officials said.

TEENS ARE TAKING UP LIFE ONLINE. HOW WIRED IS TOO WIRED?

A new survey says that the Internet has all but saturated the youth market.

The report compiled for the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that nearly nine out of 10 young people, ages 12 through 17, have online access -- up from about three-quarters of young people in 2000.

By comparison, about 66 percent of American adults now use the Internet.

David Pulliam, a 17-year-old high school senior from Indianapolis, is a typical example of a wired teen. More...

THE DNC APPLIES FOR HILLARYCARE

The Democratic Leadership Council, an organization of influential party moderates, named Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton today to direct a new initiative to define a party agenda for the 2006 and 2008 elections.

The appointment solidified the identification of Clinton, once considered a champion of the party's left, with the centrist movement that helped propel her husband to the White House in 1992. It also continued her effort, which has accelerated in recent months, to present herself as a moderate on issues such as national security, immigration and abortion. More...

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY. DEAL WITH IT AND STOP WHINING.

London's top police official says he regrets the death of a Brazilian national shot and killed by armed officers in a subway station but defends the policy of shooting to kill suspected suicide bombers.

"To the family, I can only offer our deepest regrets," Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair said Sunday.

"I think we are quite comfortable that the policy is right, but of course these are fantastically difficult times," Blair told Sky Television.

"It's still happening out there, there are still officers having to make those calls as we speak, he said, adding: "Somebody else could be shot." More...

TOUR DE LANCE ... AGAIN.

As if Lance Armstrong had anything left to prove, as if his crowning achievement really needed an emphatic stamp, cycling's greatest champion gave his best performance Saturday -- claiming the stage win he lacked and all but guaranteeing a seventh consecutive Tour de France victory.

Armstrong swept away any notion that this Tour would be somehow incomplete without winning a stage, pouring on speed at the end of Saturday's time trial to round out his unparalleled career. Unlike his previous six winning Tours, the American had not won an individual stage -- until Saturday's 20th. More...

FOUNDATION FOR A POLICE STATE? PROBABLY.

Pressure is building for greater use of video cameras to keep watch over the nation's cities -- particularly in transportation systems and other spots vulnerable to terrorism -- after the bombings in London.

The calls have come over the last few weeks as British investigators released surveillance footage of the bombers in the deadly July 7 attacks and then put out frames of suspects in Thursday's failed attacks. More...

IT'S JOHN ROBERTS. DUCK, THERE'S A LOT OF MUD HEADING YOUR WAY.

John G. Roberts Jr. and J. Michael Luttig have both marched up through the Republican ranks, from Supreme Court clerkships to White House jobs to the federal bench.

Now the two area judges -- Roberts sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit; Luttig is a Tysons Corner-based member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit -- have emerged on President Bush's short list of potential nominees to the Supreme Court, according to lawyers familiar with the administration's deliberations.

Conservative activists in the Republican base view both as far more acceptable than Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, who has become a top contender for the court, and have begun to promote the pair. But even though both judges are conservative -- and close friends -- they present a distinctly different choice in style and temperament that could influence their selection and say a great deal about how Bush wants to shape the court. IF WE TANGLE WITH CHINA OVER TAIWAN, WE'LL BE NUKED.

China is prepared to use nuclear weapons against the US if it is attacked by Washington during a confrontation over Taiwan, a Chinese general said on Thursday.

“If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,” said General Zhu Chenghu.

Gen Zhu was speaking at a function for foreign journalists organised, in part, by the Chinese government. He added that China's definition of its territory included warships and aircraft.

“If the Americans are determined to interfere [then] we will be determined to respond,” said Gen Zhu, who is also a professor at China's National Defence University.

“We . . . will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of the cities east of Xian. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds . . . of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese.”

Gen Zhu is a self-acknowledged “hawk” who has warned that China could strike the US with long-range missiles. But his threat to use nuclear weapons in a conflict over Taiwan is the most specific by a senior Chinese official in nearly a decade. More...

PRELUDE TO AN EXIT?

Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, ailing with cancer, is in the hospital with a fever, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Rehnquist was taken by ambulance to an Arlington, Va., hospital Tuesday night and was admitted for observation and tests, Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said.

There was no immediate word on his condition Wednesday afternoon.

Rehnquist, 80 and ill with thyroid cancer, has been the subject of intense speculation about whether he will retire. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, 75, announced earlier this month that she will be leaving. More...

SHOCK: THE POPE TAKES ISSUE WITH BOOKS HYPING WITCHCRAFT TO CHILDREN. WHAT A PRUDE.

Pope Benedict XVI has condemned the Harry Potter books as "subtle seductions," capable of corrupting young Christians, in two letters which have now been published online.

However, despite criticism from the pontiff, it would appear the boy wizard Harry has built a fanbase close to the headquarters of Catholicism. Amazon.co.uk, the online bookseller, today revealed it had received advance orders for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, published on Saturday, from over 90 countries - including the Vatican. SHOCKED? WHY WOULD THEY BE SHOCKED?

Prime Minister Tony Blair has expressed his shock that the four men believed to have carried out last week's deadly terrorist attacks on London's transit system were British nationals.

But speaking to parliament on Wednesday, Blair also urged Britons to react calmly to the bombings that killed at least 52 people, and he condemned attacks against Muslims. More...

IT'S ON.

Top Senate Democrats floated the names of potential candidates for the Supreme Court on Tuesday in a meeting with President Bush, describing them as the type of nominee who could avoid a fierce confirmation battle.

Several officials familiar with the discussion said Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals and Judge Ed Prado of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, both of whom are Hispanic, were among the names mentioned as Bush met with key lawmakers from both parties to discuss the first high court vacancy in 11 years. OBAMA: DEMS ARE 'TRYING TO DECIDE WHAT [THEIR] CORE VALUES ARE'

"I see a Democratic Party afraid to say they're Democrats, who voted for the war in Iraq and voted for tax cuts for the wealthy," said Glenn Anderson of Orlando. "Why should I remain a Democrat?"

It was a tough question. But Nelson and Obama tried to answer it.

"The Democrats at times have lost their way," conceded Obama. "We are trying to decide what our core values are." More...

NONE ARE IMMUNE TO ISLAMIC RADICALISM. THE SOONER WE ALL LEARN THAT, THE BETTER.

World leaders condemned the deadly attacks in London Thursday and quickly ordered security stepped up in their own countries, vowing to cooperate to track down the attackers in a globe-spanning pledge of solidarity.

Spain, bitterly familiar with terror after train bombings in Madrid killed 191 people last year, put its security forces on maximum alert, posting army and police units to watch over airports, train stations and shopping centers.

The government of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero offered its "unconditional help to chase the criminals who perpetrated such a repugnant attack." More...
