The announcement by the Groningen Academic Hospital came amid a growing discussion in Holland on whether to legalize euthanasia on people incapable of deciding for themselves whether they want to end their lives - a prospect viewed with horror by euthanasia opponents and as a natural evolution by advocates.

American troops said yesterday they had uncovered the largest weapons cache to date in Fallujah, where Iraqi officials said more than 2,000 people died in the weeklong U.S.-led offensive aimed at curbing the insurgency so that elections could be held nationwide.

The Fallujah siege angered many in the influential Sunni minority, producing calls to boycott the vote, a move that could cost the new government much-needed legitimacy.

The weapons cache, described by the U.S. military as the largest uncovered so far in Fallujah, was discovered Wednesday in the Saad Bin Abi Waqas Mosque, where fugitive rebel leader Abdullah al-Janabi often preached.More...

British security services thwarted planned September 11-style terror attacks on Heathrow Airport and skyscrapers in London's Canary Wharf financial district, according to two media reports.

But the stories, which cited unidentified sources, did not say when or where the plots were uncovered, or how close they came to being carried out.

The plans to crash planes into the two targets were among four or five attacks planned by terrorists linked to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network, ITV News said Monday night and the Daily Mail newspaper reported in its Tuesday editions.

17-YR OLD GIVES GOTTI BOYS THE BEATING WE ALL WISH WE COULD GIVE THEM

Victoria Gotti's sons Carmine, 18, and John, 17, took a beating last weekend after they allegedly harassed a 15-year-old girl at a Long Island mall. The 17-year-old brother of the aggrieved girl delivered a beat-down to the Gotti boys after they "pinched her butt and made disgusting comments" at the Roosevelt Field Mall on Saturday, says our source.

The enraged brother and two of his friends approached the Gottis and their 10-person crew after his sister complained about their boorish behavior.

"Next thing you know this kid was really beating the c- -p out of Carmine," a witness to the melee told PAGE SIX. "All the Gotti friends were taking cheap shots, punching and kicking the back of this kid's head, but he didn't care. He just continued to beat Carmine till he was bloody, and then he went after John and whupped him, too.

"He was in a zone, repeating, 'Not my sister. I don't care who you are.' And the Gottis' crew couldn't hold him back. The whole crowd of people was cheering, adults were coming up to the kid after the fight and congratulating him. He really showed those boys they aren't above the law."

The Gotti brothers have appeared on their A&E show, "Growing Up Gotti," picking up girls at the mall.

Mall security guards and police broke up the fracas, but no charges have been filed. Our source claimed that mall security had received "several complaints" about the Gottis' behavior prior to the fight from fed-up store owners and shoppers.

"One security guard said they got a complaint from the mother of a 12-year-old girl the Gottis and their friends had harassed," another witness said.

The youth who beat up the Gottis "was like 5-foot-10," not that big. Their grandfather [John Gotti] would be rolling over in his grave if he saw that. They not only fought like cowards, they're a bunch of wimps."

Victoria Gotti told PAGE SIX's Fernando Gil the attack on her sons was an unprovoked act caused by sheer jealousy: "Carmine dated a girl he liked. Jealousy makes people do crazy things. This boy was no exception to the rule. It's unfortunate that boys can't talk out their differences."

Former presidential candidate Howard Dean is considering a bid to become chairman of the national Democratic Party.

Steve Grossman, himself a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said Dean had told him he was thinking about it.

Dean was traveling today in New York and unavailable for comment. His spokeswoman, Laura Gross, said ``it was far too early to be speculating on that.''

The 240 members of the Democratic National Convention will elect a new chair early next year. Several names are already being mentioned, including former Clinton aide Harold Ickes; Donna Brazile, who ran Al Gore's presidential campaign, and Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack.

Dean has been outspoken since the beginning of his presidential bid in saying that the Democratic Party must establish a separate and unique identity from Republicans.

We attended Promise Keepers in Orlando last last night and today. Last night, when the crowd of 12,000+ men learned of the live event feed being broadcast to troops in Iraq, the roof of the TD Waterhouse Center blew off with the most pronounced, heartfelt, and dramatic leaping-to-the-feet ovation I've ever witnessed.

The volume and intensity, however, didn't compare to the explosive ovation those same men gave up this morning after being read an email that Promise Keepers received about the previous night.

The email talked of helments and flak jackets being removed, and tears being shed as some of our boys stationed in Baghdad, Iraq witnessed the Christian men in Orlando, FL paying them much-deserved and thunderous respect on behalf of a grateful nation.

NEAR FALLUJAH, Iraq, Nov 6 (AFP) - With US forces massing outside Fallujah, 35 marines swayed to Christian rock music and asked Jesus Christ to protect them in what could be the biggest battle since American troops invaded Iraq last year.

Men with buzzcuts and clad in their camouflage waved their hands in the air, M-16 assault rifles laying beside them, and chanted heavy metal-flavoured lyrics in praise of Christ late Friday in a yellow-brick chapel.

They counted among thousands of troops surrounding the city of Fallujah, seeking solace as they awaited Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's decision on whether or not to invade Fallujah.

"You are the sovereign. You're name is holy. You are the pure spotless lamb," a female voice cried out on the loudspeakers as the marines clapped their hands and closed their eyes, reflecting on what lay ahead for them.

The US military, with many soldiers coming from the conservative American south and midwest, has deep Christian roots.

In times that fighting looms, many soldiers draw on their evangelical or born-again heritage to help them face the battle.

"It's always comforting. Church attendance is always up before the big push," said First Sergeant Miles Thatford.

"Sometimes, all you've got is God."

Between the service's electric guitar religious tunes, marines stepped up on the chapel's small stage and recited a verse of scripture, meant to fortify them for war.

One spoke of their Old Testament hero, a shepherd who would become Israel's king, battling the Philistines some 3,000 years ago.

"Thus David prevailed over the Philistines," the marine said, reading from scripture, and the marines shouted back "Hoorah, King David," using their signature grunt of approval.

The marines drew parallels from the verse with their present situation, where they perceive themselves as warriors fighting barbaric men opposed to all that is good in the world.

"Victory belongs to the Lord," another young marine read.

Their chaplain, named Horne, told the worshippers they were stationed outside Fallujah to bring the Iraqis "freedom from oppression, rape, torture and murder ... We ask you God to bless us in that effort."

The marines then lined up and their chaplain blessed them with holy oil to protect them.

"God's people would be annointed with oil," the chaplain said, as he lightly dabbed oil on the marines' foreheads.

The crowd then followed him outside their small auditorium for a baptism of about a half-dozen marines who had just found Christ.

The young men lined up and at least three of them stripped down to their shorts.

The three laid down in a rubber dinghy filled with water and the chaplain's assistant, Navy corpsman Richard Vaughn, plunged their heads beneath the surface.

Smiling, Vaughn baptised them "in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit."

Dripping wet, Corporal Keith Arguelles beamed after his baptism.

"I just wanted to make sure I did this before I headed into the fight," he said on the military base not far from the city of Fallujah.

Clinton also said that Democrat John Kerry was hurt by the polarizing issue of gay marriage, which was legalized by Massachusetts' top court and put on the ballot in 11 states, and the surfacing of a tape from Osama bin Laden in the final days of the race.

Reminded of terrorism by the bin Laden tape, voters decided they didn't want to "change horses" during a time of heightened concern over national security, Clinton said in a speech to the Urban Land Institute at the New York Hilton. More...

The nation is at war, Bush is a magnificent wartime leader, and the night before the election we didn't know if a liberal tax-and-spend, Vietnam War-protesting senator from Massachusetts would beat him.

If Rove is "the architect" – as Bush called him in his acceptance speech – then he is the architect of high TV ratings, not a Republican victory. White House sources are telling UPI that they believe George W. Bush will win Ohio and be re-elected president of the United States.

At 10:30 p.m., Bush was told by a senior adviser that Ohio would land in the GOP column and put him over the top with at least 274 electoral votes, the sources said.

"We're very upbeat," Bush said as he watched returns in the Yellow Room at the White House with family members -- including his father, former President George H.W. Bush. "I believe I will win."

Bush's comments shortly before 10 p.m. EST reflected rising Republican hopes that Bush will win Florida and remain in contention in Ohio. Winning both those states would almost certainly return him to office.

The comments were also timed to reach voters in states where the polls had not yet closed including Hawaii, Nevada and Oregon. CNN had Bush leading with 193 electoral votes to Sen. John Kerry's 112.

We're praying that Mitch Daniels wins the governor's race. Our state is, well, in the toilet. Indiana ranks dead last or close to last in so many areas. The job market is terrible here. We've suffered under 16 years of Democratic administrations, and what's Gov. Joe Kernan's plea for re-election? "Making the Changes That Matter." The Democrats have had long enough. Let the grown-ups take over.

As Mitch says, "We haven't been governed by bad people, but we have been badly governed."

As far as the presidential race goes, Indiana will go to Bush. No shocker, that one. Though we do have one Democratic senator in Washington, Hoosiers generally are of sound mind when it comes to candidates for federal office.

KERRY PANDERS TO KIDS, PRAISES EMINEM

The biggest differences are that the trees still have leaves on them, the temperatures are above freezing, and the Red Sox fans are no longer depressed, but by and large the end of John Kerry's campaign for the presidency looks very much like it did in the beginning here in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Manchester's bars, diners and city hall are again the backdrop for the campaign of Senator Kerry, last Democrat standing from a primary season that kicked off nearly 11 months ago. Back then, Kerry defied expectation, coming from behind in the Iowa caucuses to upset Howard Dean, former governor of Vermont. On Sunday, Kerry talked about defying expectation yet again — he hopes to win New Hampshire back for the Democrats (it was a red state in 2000) by hammering at President Bush's record and portraying himself as the champion of middle-class values. "I'm a strong closer" he told the crowd of thousands, many of whom brought children still dressed for Halloween trick-or-treating. But a strong close for Kerry means pulling off a Red Sox-esque upset — an analogy the senator was not beyond making himself — as final tracking polls put him behind Bush, but well within the margin of error.
