ALWAYS KNOWN? WARNED ABOUT IT? REGRET TO SAY?
FROM BEST OF THE WEB (OPINIONJOURNAL.COM)

The Seattle Times has a Sunday section for kids called "Next," and the current edition features an online poll that asks "Who do you blame for 9/11?" Three choices are offered: "Bush," "Clinton" and "CIA." There isn't even a write-in category for those who blame the actual culprits, Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda. And people say it's crazy to think Saddam Hussein might have been involved?

There has of course been a lot of finger-pointing of late over which U.S. officials' failures to act were the most damaging. We'd just like to point out that John Kerry admitted that he had not done enough, in an appearance on CNN's "Larry King Live" on Sept. 11, 2001:

King: Senator Kerry did your . . . committee on international operations and terrorism ever actually fear something like this?

Kerry: Absolutely. Absolutely. . . . We have always known this could happen. We've warned about it. We've talked about it. I regret to say, as--I served on the Intelligence Committee up until last year. I can remember after the bombings of the embassies, after TWA 800, we went through this flurry of activity, talking about it, but not really doing hard work of responding.

This of course does not mean Kerry is to blame for Sept. 11. It merely underscores that until then, the vast majority of political leaders of both parties did not take the terrorist threat seriously enough.

Sure thing Mr. Specter, just stand there and wait until the states set off a domino effect of legal precedence before drawing your legislative sword. Then again, this is typical of you. Bush's remark at correspondents' dinner ends on seroius note.
COULTER ON CLARK
ARE YOU sitting down? Another ex-government official who was fired or demoted by Bush has written a book that ... is critical of Bush! Eureka! The latest offering is Richard Clarke's new CBS-Viacom book, "Against All Enemies," which gets only a 35 on "rate a record" because the words don't make sense and you can't dance to it.

As long as we're investigating everything, how about investigating why some loser no one has ever heard of is getting so much press coverage for yet another "tell-all" book attacking the Bush administration?

When an FBI agent with close, regular contact with President Clinton wrote his book, he was virtually blacklisted from the mainstream media. Upon the release of Gary Aldrich's book "Unlimited Access" in 1996, White House adviser George Stephanopoulos immediately called TV producers demanding that they give Aldrich no airtime. In terms of TV exposure, Aldrich's book might well have been titled "No Access Whatsoever."

Read the article by Ann Coulter: Chair-Warmer On The Hot Seat
OH REALLY?
"Second, without question, we need to disarm Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal, murderous dictator, leading an oppressive regime. We all know the litany of his offenses. He presents a particularly grievous threat because he is so consistently prone to miscalculation. He miscalculated an eight-year war with Iran. He miscalculated the invasion of Kuwait. He miscalculated America's response to that act of naked aggression. He miscalculated the result of setting oil rigs on fire. He miscalculated the impact of sending scuds into Israel and trying to assassinate an American President. He miscalculated his own military strength. He miscalculated the Arab world's response to his misconduct. And now he is miscalculating America's response to his continued deceit and his consistent grasp for weapons of mass destruction. That is why the world, through the United Nations Security Council, has spoken with one voice, demanding that Iraq disclose its weapons programs and disarm.

So the threat of Saddam Hussein with weapons of mass destruction is real, but it is not new."

THE CLARK BRIEFING
The following transcript documents a background briefing in early August 2002 by President Bush's former counterterrorism coordinator Richard A. Clarke to a handful of reporters, including Fox News' Jim Angle. In the conversation, cleared by the White House on Wednesday for distribution, Clarke describes the handover of intelligence from the Clinton administration to the Bush administration and the latter's decision to revise the U.S. approach to Al Qaeda.

THE Bush ads are working: Two weeks ago, the Washington Post poll showed Sen. John Kerry ahead of President Bush by 11 points, and the Gallup Poll had him up by 8, while more recent polls reflect a dead heat between the two.
Zogby (March 21) has Kerry up by only 48-46, and Rasmussen (March 20) has it Bush 46, Kerry 45.

Interestingly, the new surveys don't show Bush gain ing so much as they show Kerry dropping. In the odd configurations of political strategy, that is good news for the Republicans...

DICK CLARK COPIES WES CLARK'S DROOLING PRAISE OF BUSH...
The White House, seeking to cool criticism from a former top anti-terror adviser, said Tuesday that Richard Clarke's resignation letter praised President Bush's "courage, determination, calm and leadership" on Sept. 11, 2001.

"It has been an enormous privilege to serve you these last 24 months," said the Jan. 20, 2003, letter from Clarke to Bush. "I will always remember the courage, determination, calm, and leadership you demonstrated on September 11th."

Rumsfeld's predecessor, William Cohen, told the commission that the Clinton administration debated whether to launch airstrikes to kill bin Laden on three occasions in 1998 and 1999, but decided against them because of doubts about the intelligence and concerns about killing civilians.

"There were three occasions. Each time, the munitions and people were spun up," Cohen told the commission. "They were called off because the word came back, 'We're not sure.' "

As much as I hate to admit it, I would have to agree with congressman Engel's comment. Although politicized by design to go against the current administration, the words alone strike a cord that I've been playing for quite some time.

After Kerry became the national spokesman of Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) in 1971, he came under continued surveillance by the FBI, which filed thousands of pages of reports on the VVAW and Kerry himself.

"WHOEVER WINS ... WE LOSE"

No, I'm not talking about the 2004 presidential election. I'm talking about the long-awaited "Alien vs. Predator," which hits theaters in August. Yeah, yeah, I know it won't have the grandeur and emotional impact of "Lord of the Rings," or the filmmaking of, say, "Master and Commander," but this will be the perfect summer action flick. Two of science-fiction's most kick-butt villains smashing the junk out of each other. I'm all about this movie. Click here for the trailer.

EU blasts Israel for assassination of Yassin while at the same time calling for a comprehensive strategy for fighting terrorism. Sadly, the EU actually believes that economic sanctions stand a better chance of battling terrorism then singling out terrorist leaders and their command/spiritual element.
ON JIMMY CARTER ...

Does he have some sick need to be loved by tyrannical regimes, Bob, or what? It used to seem like a joke, but I find nothing funny about a former president who can look the other way while people suffer and die to avoid that pesky thing called war. I'll applaud his efforts with Habitat for Humanity, but when it comes to foreign policy, Carter is a BIG FAT ZERO.
ANY COMMENTS PAINTING THE CARTER PRESIDENCY AS ANYTHING OTHER THAN A DISMAL FAILURE ARE BASED ON LIES OR MISINTERPRETATIONS...
Jimmy Carter, the former US president, has strongly criticised George Bush and Tony Blair for waging an unnecessary war to oust Saddam Hussein based on "lies or misinterpretations". The 2002 Nobel peace prize winner said Mr Blair had allowed his better judgement to be swayed by Mr Bush's desire to finish a war that his father had started.

Independent News
CRONKITE TO KERRY: "WHAT ARE YOU ASHAMED OF?"

Dear Sen. Kerry:

In the interests of your campaign and your party's desire to unseat George W. Bush, you have some explaining to do. During the primary campaign, your Democratic opponents accused you of flip-flopping on several important issues, such as your vote in favor of the Iraq War resolution.

Certainly your sensitivity to nuance, your ability to see shades of gray where George Bush sees only black and white, explains some of your difficulty. Shades of gray don't do well in political campaigns, where primary colors are the rule. And your long and distinguished service in the Senate has no doubt led to genuine changes in some positions. But the denial that you are a liberal is almost impossible to reconcile.

When the National Journal said your Senate record makes you one of the most liberal members of the Senate, you called that "a laughable characterization" and "the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen in my life." Wow! Liberals, who make up a substantial portion of the Democratic Party and a significant portion of the independent vote, are entitled to ask, "What gives?" (more...)

MONDAY MORNING HUMOR

Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton and Al Gore arrive in heaven and stand before God's great white throne.

"Al, what do you believe in?" God asks.

"Well, I believe I won that election, but that it was your will that I did not serve. I've come to understand that now."

"Very good," God says. "Come and sit at my left."

God asks the same question of Bill, who replies, "I believe in forgiveness. I've sinned, but I've never held a grudge against my fellow man, and I hope no grudges are held against me."

"You are forgiven," God says. "Come and sit at my right."

God then addresses Hillary. "Hillary, what do you believe in?"

"I believe you're in my chair," she replies.

CNN WHINES: KERRY WAS "MOCKED" AND "ATTACKED" TODAY

Bush launches campaign from Orlando, FL today: CNN titles the story: "Thousands cheer as Bush mocks Kerry"

PTD COMMENT >
PTD BLOGGER Michale Lawand and myself attended. The "mocking", as I saw it, was more like "revealing". Standing up and exposing Senator Kerry's weak record on defense and taxes is not mocking, it's explaining.

Bush did a great job today... the energy in Orlando's convention center was out of control - very, very positive vibe, the nicest people you'd want to meet... made me want to attend a Kerry event to juxtapose the nature of the energy from the crowd... Bush was positive, upbeat, resolute,... strong... American. None of the negative, pessimistic, French aristocrat crap you get from Kerry as he looks down his lengthy nose at the crowd.

I'll tell you something else: I'm not sure the Beatles were bestowed half the ovation that W. was this afternoon. My ears are still ringing.

A couple of other random notes:

Billy Ray Cyrus performed... very moving song re: Vietnam veteran - and a few other tunes... no Achey Breakey Heart (sp?) - crowd was thankful. Bill Ray has transformed into George Michael - by appearance, not political ideology. Thank God.

Footage of Bush landing at Orlando International Airport was followed 15 or so minutes later by him entering the convention center. It would take me 45 minutes on a good day.

Kudos to the Orange County Young Republicans who did an excellent job w/ volunteer work @ the event. It was excellent... I'm confident after this afternoon that Bush's campaign will be stronger than expected ... he dropped some bombs in this speech that I'm still waiting to see replayed on the major networks... sooner or later, one of them will trip up and allow Bush's message to get out...

FROM THE CNN STORY:
[Bush] also took shots at his likely Democratic opponent, Sen. John Kerry, whom he mocked for his claim that his bid for the U.S. presidency had the support of foreign leaders.

"The other day, here in Florida, he claimed some important endorsements," Bush said about the senator from Massachusetts. "He won't tell us the name of the foreign admirers. That's OK. Either way, I'm not too worried, because I'm going to keep my campaign right here in America."

Kerry has refused to identify them, saying the leaders don't want to put their relationships with the Bush administration in jeopardy.

The president also attacked his Democratic contender's stance on Iraq.

"My opponent admits Saddam Hussein was a threat, he just didn't support my decision to remove Saddam from power. Maybe he was hoping Saddam would lose the next Iraqi election."

Kerry voted in October 2002 for a resolution authorizing the war in Iraq, but a year later he voted against a plan to appropriate $87 billion to fund operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

KERRY CALLED SECRET SERVICE AGENT 'SON OF A B*TCH' AFTER SLOPE SPILL

Dem presidential candidate John Kerry called his secret service agent a "son of a bitch" after the agent inadvertently moved into his path during a ski mishap in Idaho, sending Kerry falling into the snow.

When asked a moment later about the incident by a reporter on the ski run, Kerry said sharply, "I don't fall down," the "son of a b*itch knocked me over."

- MULTI-MILLIONAIRE JOHN F. KERRY

Dem candidate-in-waiting John Kerry is set for a 5-day luxury break at his Sun Valley, Idaho compound after a week riddled with gaffes, missteps and slippage in the polls.

Gorgeous, 19.5 rooms at 7,749 square-feet, with a market value of $4.9 million [property taxes of more than $30,000 annually], Kerry's Idaho vacation getaway will be the setting of a Spring Break regroup and unwind, sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

Private. Kerry is looking forward to enjoying the property, including the grounds, which have been freshly landscaped with Canadian Bluegrass, Fescue and Brome Mixes at a cost of more than $200,000, records show.

Unique. The mansion's "Great Room" is a 500 year old Barn, imported from England and then reassembled in Idaho.

WHO'S CONFUSED?

KERRY SAID "MORE", BUT WAS REFERRING TO "FOREIGN LEADERS" IF YOU LOOK AT THE CONTEXT. IS THERE ANY DISPUTE HERE, OR IS THE MEDIA TRYING TO HANG US UP ON SEMANTICS?

"MORE FOREIGN LEADERS" MEANS EUROPEAN LEADERS. EUROPEAN LEADERS WANT THE EUROPEAN UNION TO BE STRENGTHENED ON THE GLOBAL STAGE. A STRONGER, MORE POWERFUL EU IS HAMPERED BY A SUPERPOWER UNITED STATES DOMINATING THAT STAGE (MILITARILY AND ECONOMICALLY). THERE'S NO DOUBT EUROPEAN LEADERS, WITH MAYBE FEW EXCEPTIONS, WOULD RATHER SEE A WEAKENED U.S. - IT WOULD GIVE THE EU AN UNPRECEDENTED OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME THE COLLECTIVE WORLD POWER THEY YEARN TO BE...

BUSH MAKES THE UNITED STATES STRONGER. THEY'D RATHER KERRY.

Whatever the reason, the French are going wild for John Kerry.

THE "BUSH IS AN IDIOT" MANTRA WILL HEAT UP (CAN IT POSSIBLY GET ANY HOTTER?)
The film, which screened Saturday night, begins with the image of Bush confidently descending the stairs of Air Force One with "Hail to the Chief" signaling his arrival.

(Laughter and applause erupted at this point among the crowd of 1,200.)

The answer the movie supplies: Rove.

I guess the new government to-soon-be feels that this attack would of been prevented if they would have never supported America's war on terror. According to the new socialists, fighting terrorism "home" not abroad is enough to solve the terrorist problem or at least "their" terrorist problem.

Crawling back into holes out of fear, leaving America to fight one's battles seems to be the way of thinking in the 20th and now 21st century. The problem some countries have dealing with terrorism in their own countries and abroad is similar to the problem parents have raising children. The need to appease to avoid conflict regardless of the level of threat or danger, like the need to be a child's friend first before being a parent.

Thank you Mr. Zapatero for supporting America and the war on terror by eventually pulling out troops and verbally being outspoken on your disapproval of America going to Iraq in the first place.

But hold on..... He said "Our government will maintain cordial relations with all the governments of the world, and of course with the United States,".

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, under pressure to say which foreign leaders were rooting for him to beat President Bush, refused on Sunday to reveal any names.

"No leader would obviously share a conversation if I started listing them," Kerry told reporters after Secretary of State Colin Powell suggested he name some names or stop implying foreign leaders were encouraging him to beat Bush.

Toomey vrs Specter

The Senior Editor of the National Review writes an excellent cover story about the need for conservatives to vote more with their hearts. Using Pennsylvania's senate race as an example, most conservatives are aware that Pat Toomey is a better fit socially and fiscally however, out of fear of losing the Senate seat to a Democrat, some might feel the incumbent Republican Arlen Specter would have a better chance of winning reelection on the hopes that conventional wisdom follows through. Mr. Ponnuru's reasoning on voting for Toomey makes complete sense until he tries to sell us on the probability that the Republicans with only 51 seats in the senate would need to just win 2 of the 8 open races to maintain the current majority. As you'll see in my letter to the editor, it's not as gravy as it looks. Even know on principal alone, Toomey should receive the vote however, there is a calculated risk involved that deserves due process of weighing risk and reward prior to making a hasty decision.
